Edit Mac App Text Fields in an External Editor

Write longer text in your preferred editor and send it back to a Mac app’s text field with Cursor Crane. Text Area Portal opens the field’s content as a file and syncs saved changes back.

Before you start

In Settings > Input, choose a regular editor or configure a terminal editor and its launch command template.

Steps

  1. Focus the text field you want to edit, such as a long draft or a field containing a code snippet.
  2. Run command.createTextAreaPortal using its configured command sequence or shortcut.
  3. Edit the opened file in the external editor, then save it.
  4. Return to the original field and check that the saved content has synced back. Saving the file updates the field; it is separate from submitting the form or sending a message.

What to check

It supports most native macOS text fields and some web-based fields; it is not guaranteed to work with every custom editor. Saving edits the original field, so check the synced result before submitting it in the app.
